I would like the county to focus its development and programming efforts on initiatives that add value for a broad range of existing residents, not just for particular interest groups. In particular, I'd like to see greater spending focused on bringing in new businesses and expanding existing ones to fill our office and commercial vacancies. Further, when new residential developments are approved through the site plan... more »
Often it is very hard to navigate the bureaucratic nature of Arlington County. The website doesn't help. Sometimes we have to contact 4 different departments to get what we need. It would be helpful to have a redesign.
I would like to see better dedicated funding for economic development, beautification, green space, and programming along Columbia Pike.
I would like to make sure that there is room in the budget to continue to ensure that APS remains a top quality school district. One of the biggest issues facing APS is lack of classroom space and I would hope that the county will work with the school board to identify places in which to build new schools to accommodate the ever growing population. Given the long term planning by the county for continued growth and... more »
I live in the Ashton Heights neighborhood close to the Virginia Square metro and most streets have no, or incomplete sidewalks. This is unsafe and discourages walking.
It would be super amazing if bikers (and runners/walkers) could go down the bluemont trail on a pedestrian bridge that could span the intersection of wilson blvd and george mason. The trail has to pause at the huge four way intersection and that would be an ideal space for a pedestrian bridge, so that individuals didn't have to wait for the light (and so that parents could feel safer about kids crossing the streets there).... more »
Driving westbound down route 50, I'm surprised that the bike path doesn't really continue past past Glebe Rd. Route 50 is wide enough to have a bike path that could be longer, perhaps even on both sides of the road.
I know they are working on building a dog park towards Potomac Yards, but given the uptick in apartment buildings in Crystal City, it could really use a dog park. It doesn't have to be enormous, but a big enough space to play fetch, run around, and doggie socialization would be great.
As a young person of color, I am unsure of how the Arlington Police Department is conducting its business. Their is huge police presence around South Arlington and the bars on North Arlington. We should have more events that get the police to build trust with the community and more transparency on who they are arresting based on age, sex, gender, ethnicity etc.
I would like to be able to subscribe to departmental updates via email or sms in a similar way I do for OEM's emergency alerts. For example, I could subscribe to "Parks" news to let me when the new Parks catalogue or class sign up is ready. Or "Tax" news to know when a payment deadline is approaching. "County Board" news to know when a meeting is with a link to the agenda. Or "Election" News to be alerted about absentee... more »
If schools are a part of what makes Arlington an attractive place to live, is there any way that consideration of broader options in terms of cost-effective school (re) expansion could be a part of long-range planning? I wonder how many community centers were once elementary schools, and if there is any possibility that APS could use/claim/ reclaim some of those properties rather than just continue with the band-aid "solution"... more »
Washington Boulevard (especially north of route 50) would be an ideal corridor for a dedicated bike lane.
Also, what happened to the plan to extend the bike path beside Washington boulevard south of rt. 50? I thought that they were going to connect Columbia Pike to Crystal City and the Pentagon City Mall? I heard a lot about it three years ago but it has felt like deafening silence since then...
I'd like to see more programming/events geared towards Arlington's LGBTQ community. We don't see many events in Arlington, perhaps because of the close proximity to DC. But it would be great to see more of an effort in Arlington to celebrate/welcome this population of our community.
Arlington has a number of vocal, orchestral, and theatrical organizations: ranging from professional to amateur. They perform locally and nationally, and are what makes Arlington a very favorable place in which to live. Most of the groups are always looking for new members. The Millennial age range (30-50) is the ideal time to continue with the musical and theatrical skills learned in school or college. Families and... more »
The new lot next to the whole foods in Clarendon is a good start, and assuredly better than an abandoned lot. So, what's next for that space?
Recommendation: Turn that into a multiple story 24-7 pay parking structure, and remove the street parking between Clarendon and Courthouse.
