I would like to be able to subscribe to departmental updates via email or sms in a similar way I do for OEM's emergency alerts. For example, I could subscribe to "Parks" news to let me when the new Parks catalogue or class sign up is ready. Or "Tax" news to know when a payment deadline is approaching. "County Board" news to know when a meeting is with a link to the agenda. Or "Election" News to be alerted about absentee... more »
As a young person of color, I am unsure of how the Arlington Police Department is conducting its business. Their is huge police presence around South Arlington and the bars on North Arlington. We should have more events that get the police to build trust with the community and more transparency on who they are arresting based on age, sex, gender, ethnicity etc.
I know they are working on building a dog park towards Potomac Yards, but given the uptick in apartment buildings in Crystal City, it could really use a dog park. It doesn't have to be enormous, but a big enough space to play fetch, run around, and doggie socialization would be great.
Driving westbound down route 50, I'm surprised that the bike path doesn't really continue past past Glebe Rd. Route 50 is wide enough to have a bike path that could be longer, perhaps even on both sides of the road.
It would be super amazing if bikers (and runners/walkers) could go down the bluemont trail on a pedestrian bridge that could span the intersection of wilson blvd and george mason. The trail has to pause at the huge four way intersection and that would be an ideal space for a pedestrian bridge, so that individuals didn't have to wait for the light (and so that parents could feel safer about kids crossing the streets there).... more »
I live in the Ashton Heights neighborhood close to the Virginia Square metro and most streets have no, or incomplete sidewalks. This is unsafe and discourages walking.
I would like to make sure that there is room in the budget to continue to ensure that APS remains a top quality school district. One of the biggest issues facing APS is lack of classroom space and I would hope that the county will work with the school board to identify places in which to build new schools to accommodate the ever growing population. Given the long term planning by the county for continued growth and... more »
I would like to see better dedicated funding for economic development, beautification, green space, and programming along Columbia Pike.
Often it is very hard to navigate the bureaucratic nature of Arlington County. The website doesn't help. Sometimes we have to contact 4 different departments to get what we need. It would be helpful to have a redesign.
I would like the county to focus its development and programming efforts on initiatives that add value for a broad range of existing residents, not just for particular interest groups. In particular, I'd like to see greater spending focused on bringing in new businesses and expanding existing ones to fill our office and commercial vacancies. Further, when new residential developments are approved through the site plan... more »
I would love to see the County focus efforts on getting the occupancy rate up in Crystal City and Potomac Yard area near the airport. Vacancy and lack of a variety between 23rd St and Glebe Road off Jefferson Davis Hwy/Crystal Drive/Potomac Ave is disappointing. All of our tax dollars are going to Alexandria in Del Ray and Old town areas which is unfortunate.
Our slide into fiscal problems has been in the works for some time. Back on Oct. 25, 2013, then-County Manager Barbara Donnellan told the County and School Boards that she had "no more rabbits" that she could pull out of her budgetary hat. As a community, we must transition from being world-class spenders to finding more efficient and effective ways to stretch our communal dollars. In that regard, I have recommended a... more »
Every year there are millions of dollars in surplus funds left over at the end of the fiscal year. I attended a budget round table to ask why these funds are never used to close the inevitable budget gap for the next fiscal year, instead of raising real estate taxes to cover the budget gap. Last year there were $17 million in surplus funds that were spent, and our taxes were increased to cover an $11 million budget... more »
Perhaps a distinction needs to be drawn between essential public goods and services that benefit the entire community and those that are used by a subset of the community. Essential items include things like schools (even though one can argue that they are not used by all members of the community), roads and sidewalks, police and fire departments, and a range of other items. Goods and services that benefit a subset include... more »
Increasing property taxes and/or cutting County services are the usual suspects trotted out to deal with budgetary shortfalls. I have been a property owner in the County for over 30 years and have always found it irksome that those who rent pretty much enjoy the same County public services that I do but without paying for them [e.g., the parks, roads, libraries and schools]. Arlington County already imposes a Transient... more »
